The Women's College

The majority of institutions of higher education for women were founded in the early 19th century. Initially, these institutions were meant to prepare students for their roles as wives and mothers by teaching religion, singing, dancing, and literature. At this time, the only socially acceptable occupation was teaching and only unmarried women could be teachers. The number of women's colleges reached their peak in the 1960s with a total of 281. According to the Women's College Coalition, there are only 32 active women's colleges that remain today. There is a significant debate as to whether or not all women's colleges are still relevant. More recently, some women's colleges have updated their policies to include admission to students who identify as trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming. Therefore, this podcast aims to highlight the diverse experiences and life stories of guests who have attended these higher education institutions.
